App Store Optimization (ASO): a practical guide
On this page
Most app discovery starts with a search in the store. ASO is how you show up and persuade people to tap “Get”.
How ASO works
Think of two jobs: visibility (appearing for the right searches) and conversion (turning views into installs). Both matter. Ranking first with a weak listing wastes traffic.
Apple App Store vs Google Play
| Element | Apple App Store | Google Play |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Up to 30 characters, heavily weighted | Up to 30 characters, heavily weighted |
| Subtitle / short description | Subtitle, 30 characters | Short description, 80 characters |
| Keywords | Hidden keyword field, 100 characters | No keyword field. Keywords come from your text |
| Long description | Not indexed for search, but affects conversion | Indexed for search, up to 4,000 characters |
| Visuals | Icon, screenshots, preview video | Icon, feature graphic, screenshots, video |
Limits can change, so verify them in each store’s documentation.
An ASO checklist
- Research keywords people actually search. Look at competitors, related terms, and store suggestions.
- Write a clear title with your brand and your main keyword.
- Use the subtitle or short description to state the benefit in plain words.
- Fill the keyword field (Apple) with relevant, non-repeated words, separated by commas.
- Write a useful description (Google). Use keywords naturally and explain the benefits.
- Design a strong icon. It should be simple, recognizable, and distinct. Test variations.
- Make screenshots tell a story. Lead with the main benefit, use short captions, and show real screens.
- Show localized listings if you serve other languages or regions.
- Earn ratings. Ask at a good moment, such as after a success, and reply to reviews.
- Update regularly. Fresh releases signal an active app.
Test and measure
Use Product Page Optimization on Apple and Store Listing Experiments on Google Play to test icons, screenshots, and text. Track impressions, product page views, and install conversion in your store dashboards, and connect them to your analytics.
Keyword research, step by step
- List seed terms. Write the words a customer would type to find your kind of app, including the problem (“split bills”), the category (“expense tracker”), and competitors’ names.
- Collect suggestions. Type your seeds into the store search bars and note the autocomplete suggestions, which reflect real searches.
- Study competitors. Read the titles, subtitles, and descriptions of the top apps for each term. Which words do they use repeatedly?
- Score each keyword on three things: relevance to your app, search popularity, and competition. ASO tools estimate popularity and difficulty.
- Choose a primary keyword for the title and a set of supporting keywords for the subtitle or short description and, on Apple, the hidden keyword field.
- Avoid repeats. On Apple, words in your title and subtitle do not need to be repeated in the keyword field. Use the space for new terms.
- Re-check every quarter. Search behavior and competitors change.
Writing a title and subtitle that work
| Weak | Better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “SplitPay” | “SplitPay: Split Bills & Expenses” | Adds the benefit and searchable words |
| “Best app for everything” | “Fitly: Home Workouts & Plans” | Specific, believable, keyword-rich |
| All caps and symbols | Clean, readable text | Stores penalize spammy titles and users distrust them |
Do not stuff keywords or use competitor names you do not own. Stores can reject or demote listings that do.
Screenshots that convert
- Lead with the main benefit, not a login screen.
- Use short captions that a skimmer can read in two seconds.
- Show real interface with believable data.
- Put the strongest three screenshots first, because many people do not scroll.
- Test a video preview for apps that benefit from motion.
- Localize screenshots for important markets.
Ratings and reviews
Both stores weigh ratings and recent reviews. Ask for a rating after a success moment (not at launch or after an error), use the platform’s native rating prompt, and reply politely to reviews, especially negative ones, once you have fixed the problem. A higher rating improves conversion as well as ranking.
What to measure
| Metric | Meaning | If it is low |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | How often your app appears in search and browse | Improve keywords and ranking |
| Product page views | People who tapped through | Improve icon, title, and subtitle |
| Conversion rate | Views that became installs | Improve screenshots, description, rating |
| Keyword rankings | Position for target terms | Adjust metadata, earn more ratings |
| Retention | Users who stay | Not ASO: fix the product. See retention |
Change one thing at a time where you can, so you know what caused the result.
ASO is not the whole plan
ASO captures people already searching. To reach everyone else, combine it with app promotion, content, and paid campaigns. If you have not launched yet, see how to publish your app.
Frequently asked questions
What is ASO?
App Store Optimization is the process of improving an app's visibility and conversion rate in the App Store and Google Play, similar to SEO for websites.
How is Apple ASO different from Google Play ASO?
Apple uses the title, subtitle, and a hidden keyword field. Google Play indexes the title, short description, and full description. Each store needs its own keyword strategy.
How long does ASO take to work?
Small changes can shift rankings within days or weeks, but steady growth takes months of testing, review management, and updates.
Do ratings affect ASO?
Yes. Ratings and reviews influence both ranking and the likelihood that people install, so ask happy users to rate and respond to feedback.
